WHO WE ARE

"Stand Together, Make A Difference" is a group of concerned citizens, professionals and community agencies in the greater Danbury area. Our mission is to form a collaborative effort in expanding ownership of substance abuse prevention among our children, families, and adults. This effort in combating substance abuse through prevention will be accomplished through education, community involvement, and providing alternatives to substance use. "Stand Together, Make A Difference" is also the designated Local Prevention Council for Danbury.

In order to make a significant impact, every segment of the community must be involved. To this end, our membership includes representatives of:

Danbury Housing Authority
Danbury Police Department
Midwestern Connecticut Council on Alcoholism
Danbury Public Schools
Association of Religious Communities
Danbury Youth Services
Good Friend/Green Chimneys
Housatonic Valley Coalition Against Substance Abuse, Inc.
CT Department of Children and Families
Greater Danbury Coalition for A Community United

Membership is continually open to any person or agency interested in the prevention of the abuse of alcohol or other drugs. Stand Together is involved in events year around.

Program Narrative

Taste of Danburv:

Taste of Danbury is a yearly event sponsored by City Center of Danbury. Each year the attendance increases with 1995 being the record high year of 12,000. STMAD partners exhibit their program information and materials under a large tent in the center of the event.
Several thousand contacts were made during the one day.

Junior Post Prom Party:

The goal of the Junior Post Prom Party is to provide a drug and alcohol free party alternative for prom goers. The party is also open to those juniors who opted not to attend the prom, but might chose to participate in parties afterwards. Food, music and activities and raffling of gifts are provided.

Safe Celebrations Campaign:

Distributing "No ID No Sale" information to Danbury liquor stores. Packets include information on affects of drinking and driving and consequences of these actions, as well as posters and studies the retailers display stating their position on following the law.

Prom Promise:

Prom Promise is designed to help save teenage lives and reduce injuries caused by impaired driving. Schools implement activities and events anytime from one to four weeks prior to the school prom. The series of activities and events gradually begins to escalate and increasingly helps students become aware of what dangers lie ahead if someone decides to mix alcohol or other drug with driving a vehicle. Because the goal is 100% student sign-up of the Prom Promise pledge, the program helps to reverse negative peer pressure into positive peer pressure.
Each student who signs the pledge receives a special gift courtesy of Nationwide Insurance. Schools can enter regional competition by presenting information on the number of pledges signed and a school scrapbook of activities to help win cash for the school and prizes for the students who signed the pledge.

Milton Creagh:

Milton Creagh is an internationally known drug prevention speaker for conferences, conventions, youth rallies and workshops. He believes in straight, down-to-earth, strong talk about the drug problem and the solutions that are available to every community. Milton will address the middle schools, high school student body with break-out groups to follow, as well as parent workshops. That will also include follow-up groups.
