Comprehensive School-to-Careers web guide launches `www.school-to-careers.com`
CINCINNATI, OH - South-Western Educational Publishing (SWEP), a division of International Thomson Publishing (ITP), unveiled www.school-to-careers.com, a comprehensive web guide dedicated solely to the School-to-Careers movement. In 1994, President Clinton signed the School-to-Work (STW) Opportunities Act; an education reform initiative to establish a national framework within which all States can create School-to-Work Opportunities systems. Since the signing, this movement has experienced tremendous growth. According to a recently released 2-year progress report to Congress, 500,000 students, 135,000 employers and 1,800 schools throughout the nation are currently involved in federally funded STW activities. The success of the STW movement has created an increasing need for accessible, relevant information on implementation strategies, best practices, effective curriculums, job training programs, and legislative news. To facilitate the distribution of this information to educators, students, and businesses, South-Western developed school-to-careers.com. The web site is managed primarily by SWEP, and is co-sponsored by Delmar Publishers, West Publishing, CORD (Center for Occupational Research and Development) and STW News. The first of its kind, school-to-careers.com will unfold in three phases. Phase 1 launched on January 1, 1997, and targets the STW instructor. Phase 2 adds sections designed to involve students and Phase 3 contains items of interest to the business community. Features of Phase 1 include a calendar of key STW conferences and events, a glossary-of-terms and statistics, news items, on-line catalog and curriculum guide, and a listing of targeted, useful links and listservs. Plans for Phase 2 include the addition of information on students at risk, outreach programs for students with disabilities, home schooling programs, product reviews and testimonials, a career path area, and a discussion group/chat room. Visitors to the site may request additional STW materials, including the industry's first true `School-to-Careers` catalog for high schools, and a comprehensive Curriculum Guide Folder. The Curriculum Guides outline the required courses students need for their career major of choice, as designated by the Integrated System for Workforce Education Curricula. Each guide provides examples of materials that work well in these classes. This tool will be useful to educators beginning the transition to a School-to-Careers approach and those who are seeking to revitalize their curriculum. Both items are free to educators and are available by completing the on-line request form or calling 800/824-5179. |
